Your Summer Skincare Routine, According to a Licensed Esthetician

Why Your Skin Needs a Summer Refresh

As temperatures rise, so do the demands on your skin. Humidity, UV exposure, sweat, and increased outdoor activity can disrupt your skin barrier, deplete hydration, and accelerate visible aging — all while your winter routine may be working against you. As a licensed esthetician, I see this shift every year: clients come in with congestion, sensitivity, or dullness that traces right back to a routine that hasn't evolved with the season.

The good news? A few strategic swaps can make all the difference. Here's exactly how I approach summer skin — and the products I trust to get there.

Step 1: Protect with Broad-Spectrum SPF (Every. Single. Day.)

If there's one non-negotiable in summer skincare, it's SPF. UV radiation is the #1 driver of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer risk — and summer sun is no joke. But not all sunscreens are created equal. You want a formula that protects without clogging pores, pilling under makeup, or leaving a white cast.

My go-to: the Lipid Shield SPF 30. This isn't your average sunscreen. It's formulated with skin-identical lipids that reinforce the moisture barrier while delivering broad-spectrum protection. It wears beautifully under makeup, feels weightless on the skin, and supports barrier health — which is especially important when your skin is under environmental stress. At $90, it's an investment in your skin's long-term health.

Pro tip: Apply SPF as the last step of your morning routine, and reapply every 2 hours if you're spending time outdoors.

Step 2: Hydrate Smarter, Not Heavier

One of the biggest summer skincare mistakes I see is skipping moisturizer because skin feels oily or already hydrated from sweat. Here's the truth: dehydrated skin actually produces more oil to compensate. The solution isn't to strip or skip it's to hydrate with the right ingredients.

This summer, the science of the skin microbiome is changing how we think about hydration. A balanced microbiome means a stronger barrier, less sensitivity, and more resilient skin overall. That's why I'm obsessed with the Hydrobiome Mist ($75) and Hydrobiome Serum ($165) both formulated to support the skin's natural microbiome ecosystem while delivering deep, lasting hydration.

  • Use the Hydrobiome Mist throughout the day to refresh and rebalance — it's perfect for on-the-go hydration and works beautifully over makeup.
  • Layer the Hydrobiome Serum under your SPF each morning for a concentrated dose of microbiome-supporting actives that keep your barrier strong all day.

Step 3: Treat with Next-Generation Actives

Summer doesn't mean you have to pause your active skincare. It just means being smarter about what you use and when. Heavy retinols and aggressive exfoliants can increase photosensitivity, but peptides and gentle exfoliating acids are your best friends this season.

The Active Serum ($96) is one of my favorite warm-weather treatments. It delivers next-generation peptides that support collagen synthesis and skin renewal without the irritation or sun-sensitivity concerns of stronger actives. It's the kind of serum that works quietly in the background — and you notice the results over time in firmer, more even-toned skin.

Best used in the evening, followed by a nourishing moisturizer to support overnight repair.
